Alachua County FL Substance Abuse Statistics

Alachua County, FL, has been experiencing higher rates of substance abuse compared to the state of Florida[1]. Morbidity and mortality due to substance use, misuse, and overdose have been rising steadily over the past two decades[2]. In 2022, the rate per 100,000 of Adult Substance Abuse Beds in Alachua County was 6.2 compared to Florida at 1.6[1]. Drug overdose deaths in the county have also been increasing, with Alachua County leading the state with the highest rate of non-fatal drug overdoses last year[2]. These statistics indicate that substance abuse is a significant public health concern in Alachua County.

The most commonly abused substances in Alachua County include prescription opioids, marijuana, and alcohol[3]. According to the Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey (FYSAS), our youth have moved away from traditional drugs of abuse such as heroin and crack cocaine[4]. However, the dangerous opioid was the most lethal substance in the reports for both years, causing the most deaths[5]. This highlights the importance of addressing prescription opioid abuse in the county. Additionally, the FYSAS ranks the types of drugs used by students in order, with marijuana being the most commonly used drug in Alachua County schools[6]. These statistics suggest that prevention and intervention efforts should focus on addressing the use of prescription opioids, marijuana, and alcohol.

Certain demographics and risk factors are associated with substance abuse in Alachua County. The Florida Department of Health in Alachua County conducted a study to determine the intersection between prescription opioid use, illicit drug use, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among Alachua County residents[7]. The study found that among participants, 9.3% reported ever having an STI, and 40% reported using prescription opioids. These findings suggest that individuals who engage in risky sexual behaviors may also be at a higher risk for substance abuse. Additionally, the FYSAS tracks indicators assessing risk and protective factors for substance abuse among youth in Alachua County[8]. Results indicate that youth who report experiencing high levels of stress and depression may be at an increased risk for substance abuse. Understanding these demographics and risk factors can help inform targeted prevention and intervention efforts in Alachua County.

Alachua County Florida Government Residential Addiction Detox. Metamorphosis (Meta) is a long-term, clinically managed, high-intensity residential therapeutic community (TC) appropriate for adults with moderate to severe substance use disorders or suffering from a co-occurring mental health and substance abuse condition. Most participants at Meta have acute multi-dimensional needs, including recurrent criminality and an array of other interrelated maladaptive cognitive and interpersonal deficits that cannot be treated safely or effectively at a less intense level of care facility. The length of stay at Meta typically ranges from 6-12 months, however, because Meta is a phase driven program that mirrors the sequence of challenges often faced by individuals as they move from a socially maladaptive lifestyle to one that is anticipated to be more pro-social and recovery oriented, a resident’s time in treatment is principally determined by their goal achievement as identified on their individualized treatment plan as well as their ability to consistently role-model appropriate behavior within the therapeutic community.
